This is a photo of a 1915 Lancia Theta Spider. Manufactured two (2) years after Spiral Wound gaskets were first invented. This car was fitted with a starting handle, packing to seal the water pump, and a long list of other obsolete technologies.

Would you purchase a car today with these features? Yet Spiral Wounds are still commonly used.

 

Spiral Wounds create a seal by crushing metal. Certain factors will have an effect on that seal, which requires you to retighten or even replace them.

That’s a bit like driving the Lancia and having to keep stopping to put more water in the radiator. Acceptable in its day but is it standard practice today?

 

 

 

Many will tell you that only a small percentage of gaskets leak. What they don’t mention is that the leakage is dependent on the sophistication of the method being used to measure leakage. So water drops or air bubbles may be perfectly acceptable.

 

 

 

 

But that’s just not good enough if you are dealing with hazardous and/or critical materials, environmental impact or possible personal injury.

Why is the Selco Seal gasket so unique?

The gasket is a device that, inserted between two surfaces mutually stationary, prevents the fluid’s exit. Usually each gasket to work properly has to carry out the following three functions: assure a strong initial seal; keep the seal over the necessary length of time and be easily removed and replaced.

The initial bolt load is transferred to the gasket via the flanges. This first seating stress allows the material to enter into the roughness of the flanges, and assures the initial seal ability. As shown above, the tightening operational load is greater on the outside diameter (close to the bolts circumference) than on the inside one.

The system pressure generates a hydrostatic force which tends to open the bolts, and reduces the stress on the gasket. It means that the gasket has to be elastic enough and capable of maintaining a residual stress to assure the seal ability. The stress relaxation performance is vital to avoid potential leakage. Since there is proportionality between gasket’s thickness and loss of bolt load, the thinnest gasket possible is to be used, and needs only to be sufficiently thick to recover all the flanges’ roughness and distortions.

How it Works:

Flange bolts are torqued to stretch them and place load on the gasket face.

 

The conventional gasket on the left has a large contact area and often requires greater than 10,000 psi seating stress to compress.

 

 

 

 

 

 

This means the flange bolts, which have much less area than the gasket face they squeeze, are often torqued to near their yield strength.

If the flange expands due to process cycles, the bolts will often exceed their elastic limit (like overstretching a spring), the gasket becomes a leaker, and a retorque of the bolts must be done.

 

 

When the flange is closed with a Selco Seal gasket, the metal carrier encapsulates the sealing element, making the gasket virtially blowout proof (the metal carrier must fail for the gasket to fail).

 

 

The clamping force, transferred to the sealing element, exerts a unit pressure far greater than that of an ordinary gasket, energizing the sealing element so that a minimum of 2850 psi seating stress is needed.

 

This gives 40% compression of the sealing element and a 20% margin for recovery, at a bolt torque equaling <50% of yield, plenty of margin for process cycling without retorquing.

 

 

For the most demanding of applications, the flange can be Live Loaded along with the Selco Seal gasket to give the ultimate in spring capacity.
